In 2003, CTM presented the latest developments in the fields of experimental electronic music and related media art. Achim Szepanski, head of the mille plateaux label, coined the term »media-music« to describe a process that challenges traditional musical concepts as it forces us to focus on factors like code, programming, hardware and connectivity in describing and understanding contemporary digital music. But it also adds to the increasing interplay of music with other media formats, such as installation, video, motion graphics, and design. More and more, these aspects grow together through the use of similar hard-and software, the reconciliation of art, science, and design, and the requirements of a specific methodical approach able to reflect the media-inherent structures. The 2003 CTM and transmediale festivals theme, Play Global!, aimed to explore the artistic and cultural effects of globalization.
