Nyege Nyege x CTM Residency

Funded by Musicboard Berlin

This initiative supported Berlin-based musicians with a residency at Nyege Nyege studios in Kampala, Uganda. The residency programme was particularly suited for musicians who take joy in cooperative work, improvisation, and experimentation. Output had been presented at Nyege Nyege and CTM Festival in various forms.

2021: Ale Hop

Alejandra Cardenas, aka Ale Hop, composes electronic and electroacoustic music with strains of noise, pop, avant-garde, and ambient. She uses a complex repertoire of extended techniques for electric guitar and real-time sampling devices. During her residency, she aims to explore non-Western, syncopated and other polyrhythms patterns; and the encounter between Afroperuvian meters and traditional Central Uganda rhythms.

2019: DJ Scotch Egg

He is »definitely not a DJ, he’s defiantly not Scottish, and he’s probably not an Egg.« Shigeru Ishihara aka DJ Scotch Egg has been active for almost two decades, and is known for his energetic 8-bit breakcore performances that embrace a wide berth of sounds. He was awarded the inaugural residency and, during his time in Kampala, spawned a collaboration with Khanja & MC Yallah. His 2021 release, Tewari, on Nyege Nyege's Hakuna Kuala label documents several of his encounters and ensuing collaborations.
