In the 2017 Hacklab, participants explored the irrational and non-rational, the sense of mind as more than simply computer, delving into the deeper frontiers of our own human wetware. What can we say about the relationship between the body, technology and the rational? The phrase »expression« is commonly associated with musical technology—but what is being expressed, and how?
This Hacklab edition was co-hosted by Byrke Lou and Peter Kirn, and housed at the Native Instruments Office in Berlin. The finale performance took place at HAU2. Four public Hacklab Input talks rounded out the lab's activities: »Emotions in form: How design of musical objects embodies memory and feeling« with Ārash Āzādi, Simonne Jones, Steinunn Arnardottir, and Johannes Schroth, »Designing Musical Interfaces: A Non-Representational Approach« by Enrique Tomás, »Amplifying our fears and desires: Music as a vehicle for self expression« by Jason Rentfrow, and »Creating Inclusive Hardware and Software for Musicians« by Marije Baalman, DJ Luki and Kassen, and STEIM.
