Laurel Halo

[US]

Heavy, mutilated strains of electronic music: Laurel Halo's productions are shapeshifting messes, moody and ecstatic, with flashes of rhythmic brilliance mediated by modal simplicity.

Taking influence from the techno of her Midwest roots, the Berlin-based artist has developed a unique take on electronic music, combining the machine pulse of hardware and software instruments (synthesizers, samplers, drum machines) with her own voice to address physical process, liminality, and virtual violence. Halo’s debut album, Quarantine, was released on Hyperdub in 2012, and was followed by Chance of Rain in 2013. Both albums were met with widespread critical acclaim, and topped year-end lists at The Washington Post, The Wire, and other respected publications. Her most recent record is a double-pack for the London-based label Honest Jon’s, and she has performed live in a variety of clubs, concert halls, and strange spaces worldwide.

Also an avid DJ, Halo hosts a monthly show on Berlin Community Radio, having cut her teeth as a freeform DJ on the legendary WCBN-FM station in her native city of Ann Arbor, MI. She has collaborated with John Cale, Julia Holter, David Borden, Daniel Wohl and NH’Koxyen as Terepa for an experimental composition project on Nicolas Jaar's Other People imprint, and has contributed a cover of the late folk singer, Karen Dalton, on a recent Tompkins Square compilation.
