Until recently, shapeshifting Swedish artist Peder Mannerfelt was best known for his techno productions as The Subliminal Kid, but a sequence of sinister, amorphous hardware experiments issued under his own name have signalled a new sonic direction.
Over the past decade, Mannerfelt has served as one half of analogue electronics duo Roll the Dice, worked with Fever Ray, and remixed artists such as Massive Attack and Bat for Lashes. While response to early efforts under his own name—including 2013's 'Stockholm Recorded' EP and a pair of 12"s for his eponymous label, Peder Mannerfelt Productions—was somewhat muted, the crushing dynamics of his Lines Describing Circles full-length for Digitalis the following year forced critics to sit up and take notice. Gathered under a stylistic umbrella coined by Maya Kalev as "power ambient," the album was received as both soporific and commanding, characterized by dense, anxiety-ridden atmospheres, shafts of noise and feedback, caustic percussion, and weighty basslines.
Since first appearing at CTM in 2015, Mannerfelt has released a second album, The Swedish Congo Record, on Peter Van Hoesen and Yves de May's experimental imprint, Archives Intérieures. A split 12-inch with Haydo, Radio Mohave, arrived on Shifted's Avian label that same year.
