Jerusalem in my Heart is Montreal-based producer and musician Radwan Ghazi Moumneh's Arabic-music project. Live, he partners with filmmaker Charles-André Coderre, who projects analogue 16mm film and 35mm slides onto multiple site-specific screens.
Born to Lebanese parents, Moumneh spent his early years in Oman before relocating to Canada after the second Gulf War. Influenced by post-punk and the raw, psychedelic quality of folk recordings from Beirut and neighboring Syria, Moumneh founded Jerusalem in my Heart as a live project in 2005, never performing with the same configuration of musicians twice. Eight years passed the first official Jerusalem in my Heart recording surfaced on Constellation Records. Mo7it Al-Mo7it was described as an effort to "forge a modern experimental Arabic music that weds melismatic singing in classical Arabic modes to electronic compositions with a punk-rock production sensibility." (Forced Exposure) Throughout, Moumneh's vocals and acoustic buzuk and zurna playing are swathed in layers of distortion, reverb and saturated synth work. He subsequently partnered with Canadian art-punk band Suuns, and returned to Constellation in 2015 with If He Dies, If If If If If If.
Moumneh also serves as an in-house producer and sound engineer at Hotel2Tango, the Montreal studio he co-owns with Howard Bilerman and Thierry Amar and Efrim Menuck of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and A Silver Mount Zion. Among the many notable artists to record at the studio are Colin Stetson and Arcade Fire. He currently splits his time between Montreal and Beirut.
